the intent for this pant was simple: to capture the simplicity and iconic nature of a traditional piece, while elevating it with a more modern, accommodating silhouette.

preserving the key details such as the adjustable double-button closure, extra-wide fly, oversized patch pockets, and a triple-needle inseam & outseam, we paired these elements with a high rise, an easy top block, and a straight wide leg.

How To Measure

first thing's first, grab a pair of your favorite pants that have a similar rise. find a measuring tape and a flat surface to measure on. be sure to lay your pants flat, smoothing out the fabric to remove any slack. compare the measurements to the chart above.

waist

the circumference of the waistband, along the top edge.

hip

the width at the bottom of the J stitch, straight across. double the flat measurement.

Front rise

the length from the bottom of the crotch seam to the top edge of the front waistband.

thigh

starting 1” below the crotch seam, the width of the leg perpendicular to the outer seam. double the flat measurement.

leg opening

the width of the opening at the bottom of the leg. double the flat measurement.

inseam

following the inside-leg seam, the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

these jeans are perfection. the high rise and generous leg opening makes for a comfortable fit, and the raw denim is sturdy and structured in a way you can only get with a super high quality fabric.

my typical i+w size is a 31, and with these i took a size 30 and could easily size down one more if i wanted to -- but for the vintage silhouette, i would just go down one size since they are running a little large. this pant felt pretty rigid when i first put them on, but not as stiff as some of our nihon menpu and kaihara fabrics. they loosened and softened really quickly, already draping and creasing exactly how i’d want them to.

my experience with the carpenter jean has been extremely positive. i feel really attached to the cut, the washed fabric, and the indigo thread detailing near the fly and on the back pockets -- styling the jeans has been really fun and a great reminder that simple and timeless is always the right choice.
