built from the origins of traditional American workwear, hencye is our tough, double-knee / patch-pocket workpant that has long remained an "everyday wear" piece for much of the team here at i+w.

as a part of our ongoing Cotton Project, this pant is constructed with Mount Vernon denim made from cotton that's been farmed regeneratively, ginned, and spun in the USA, then dyed with natural indigo grown in the southeast by Stony Creek Colors.

How To Measure

first thing's first, grab a pair of your favorite pants that have a similar rise. find a measuring tape and a flat surface to measure on. be sure to lay your pants flat, smoothing out the fabric to remove any slack. compare the measurements to the chart below.

waist

the circumference of the waistband, along the top edge.

hip

the width at the bottom of the J stitch, straight across. double the flat measurement.

Front rise

the length from the bottom of the crotch seam to the top edge of the front waistband.

thigh

starting 1” below the crotch seam, the width of the leg perpendicular to the outer seam. double the flat measurement.

leg opening

the width of the opening at the bottom of the leg. double the flat measurement.

inseam

following the inside-leg seam, the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

before a new jean is released, a member of our team takes the time to wear them day in and day out, in order to see exactly how the pant evolves over time.

notes:

a work pant chosen to represent something as rad as the cotton project was a perfect fit as they embodied all that went into making the story happen. i had never owned a pair of hencyes before so this was a new experience and fit outside of my traditional choices. they quickly became something i grabbed nearly every morning and for just about any activity the days brought on…. bike commuting, bike repair, painting, creating, skateboarding, working in the shop, plus all the dirt and grime i could throw at or on them.

i wear a 28 or 29 in most. these were true to size but i took a 29 so they could be a little more roomy. they were perfect right from the jump. they fit to exact desired look. the fabric does grow a bit and i felt with a heavier weight (yet not too heavy) fabric this made them unbelievably comfortable as time went on, and holding up to rigorous activities.

i have worn them a minimum of 2-3 times a week since may and i can already tell they are built to survive the long haul. the fabric is so durable yet soft and the wash pairs well with just about anything.

four years ago, we embarked on a project centered on taking our commitment to domestic manufacturing to the next level.

we started with the second half of our uniform, a plain white t-shirt. but from day one, we knew we wanted to continue these efforts with our first love: blue jeans.

while using our regeneratively farmed cotton was the foundation of this next step, we wanted to take it even further.

we wanted to use natural indigo.

stony creek colors
just thirty miles north of our home nashville, lies Stony Creek Colors: a regenerative farm that grows plant-based dyes throughout the southeast, including natural indigo.

this farm was founded with the intent of producing natural indigo the way it used to be made: as a 100% plant-based dye, all while practicing regenerative farming practices.

for us, these two jeans and the Cotton Project tees that preceded them are both a statement of commitment and a challenge to the apparel industry.

by seeing through the entire process, from planting a seed to releasing a garment, we want to challenge the prevailing model of exporting American cotton overseas for production. in the process, we can reinvest our own efforts back into the communities close to home.
