inspired by a beloved pair of 1950s five pocket jeans, catherine is a nod to the glory days of denim.
in preparation for the newest release of catherine, we tracked down the best fabric we could find and gave it a light wash to achieve the perfect softness.
this jean is sewn from 13.25 oz rinsed natural sevlage denim woven by Cone Denim in Greensboro, North Carolina.
each pair is patterned, cut, and sewn in the USA
from 13.25 oz. American-made natural Cone selvage denim.
catherine is a classic high-rise jean with a trouser leg and sits a full 1 3/4 inches higher on the waist than our high-rise elizabeth. with a 18" leg opening, it provides a little extra length to those who need it and even some for those who don't.
refer to our fit guide to compare all of our women’s fits side by side.
this jean runs slightly large - we recommend sizing down one size. if you are in between sizes, we have been successfully customers down while fitting catherine natural selvage rinse in the shop because the fabric has a touch more give to it than the catherine indigo.

selvage denim is woven using old-fashioned denim-weaving techniques; this particular denim was woven on antique shuttle looms in Greensboro North Carolina.
selvage looms were popular in denim weaving until the mid-to-late 1900’s when denim mills began modernizing their machinery as demand for denim was growing world-wide, by focusing on speed in manufacturing instead of quality. in the years since, American made selvage denim has become more desirable than non-selvage for two reasons: the nuance of the denim weaving technique itself and the commitment to quality from the mills producing selvage denim.
the few denim mills that have remained committed to the production of selvage denim understand and value the nuance and history of denim. and with that understanding comes a passion, as well as a self-imposed responsibility to make a superior product.
while stretch jeans are instantly flexible, readily stretching over your curves, a 100% cotton jean will learn the curves of your body over time and give you a beautifully personalized fit.
through regular wear, the points of highest tension (from bending, sitting and kneeling) will mold and conform as the fit and fabric work together to shape to your body.
if you are seeking a true fit, the first time you put on your catherines, they should be comfortably tight, this fabric will give ever so slightly in time.
a new pair should feel snug but not uncomfortable. keep in mind that this initial tightness will ease off as you wear them, as they will begin to give and take on your shape.
on the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed fit from day one, they will be stiff at first, but should not be restricting in size.
either way, to ensure you get your desired fit, it is important to consider that rigid jeans relax over time and their form will not stay as they are at first wear. this is the inherent beauty of wearing a rigid jean.
though it should be tight on day one, with wear, Catherine natural fits true to size.
- to achieve proper fit over time, through regular wear, we recommend ordering your usual size.
- if you like a more casual/relaxed fit, you may consider sizing up depending on your preference.
note: we want to make sure you have the right size for your body type and personal preference.

the best thing you can do for your jeans is wear them.
when it comes to washing, there really is no wrong answer. we live by a simple rule: wear often, wash not so often. we’ve seen great jeans that are washed every few days or so. we’ve seen beautiful jeans that have never been washed.
we strongly advise against bleaching your natural jeans.
